DIY Construction Paper Penguins

Now that it’s the middle of January- one of the coldest months of the year- it is the perfect time to make this cute penguin craft! After all, penguins are magnificent creatures that can survive in extremely cold temperatures. This craft is very simple and adorable, perfect for young kids!

Materials needed:

-Black construction paper

-White paper

-Orange construction paper

-Scissors

-Glue

-Pencil

-Black marker

-White-colored pencil (optional, but recommended for tracing on black construction paper)

-Construction paper of any color (optional, for any accessories)

Now that we have everything, let’s get crafting!

First, cut out a large semi-oval from the black construction paper for the penguin’s body. It may be helpful to use a white colored pencil to help you trace the shape before cutting it out! Fun fact about penguins: the smallest species of penguin- the Little Blue Penguin- is only 12 to 14 inches tall!

Cut out an oval about half the height of the penguin’s body from the white paper and accordion fold it. This will be the belly of the penguin. Glue it to the black paper body.

Then, cut out two circles from the white paper for the penguin’s eyes and draw a little black circle in each for the eye pupil. Glue the eyes to the penguin’s body above the white belly.

Next, cut out two long semi-circles and accordion fold each from the black construction paper. These are the penguin’s wings. Glue one on either side of the penguin’s body.

Then, out of the orange construction paper, cut out a little triangle for the beak and glue it between the penguin’s eyes. Also from the orange construction paper, trace and cut out two feet. You can make the feet just little ovals or more detailed webbed feet.

Finally, if you want to add accessories to your penguin, cut them out of colored construction paper. Some possible ideas include bows (pictured below), hats, earmuffs, and scarves!

That’s your completed construction paper penguin. How cute!
