DIY Handprint Flamingos

I think flamingos are such beautiful birds! Their pink plumage instantly makes me think of the tropics and summer! While it isn’t summer yet, this cute flamingo handprint craft is a perfect one to make as we await the summer months.

Materials needed:

-Pink construction paper

-Black construction paper

-White paper

-Pink faux feathers

-Pink pipe cleaner (one long or two shorter ones)

-Scissors

-Glue

-Pencil

Now that we have everything, let’s get crafting!

To begin, trace your or your child’s hand on the pink construction paper and cut it out.

Then, trace and cut out an oval head with a long, slightly curved neck for the flamingo. Don’t worry about the beak yet- we will be making that in the next step!

From the black construction paper, cut out a beak that is slightly bent near the end. Then, from the white paper, cut out a small rectangle and glue it to the wide end of the beak. Glue this completed beak to the edge of the flamingo’s head.

Now, glue the neck of the flamingo to the handprint you cut out for its body. The fingers of the handprint should be slightly slanted down and point away from the direction the beak is facing.

Next, take your pink pipe cleaner and cut it in half (skip this step if you are using two shorter pipe cleaners instead). The pipe cleaners are the legs of the flamingo.

Bend the two pipe cleaners at the bottom to make feet for your flamingo. You can optionally bend one of the pipe cleaners so it looks like the leg is tucked up slightly, as shown below.

Fun fact: the backward bending “knees” flamingos have are actually their ankles!

Glue the pipe cleaner legs to the bottom of the handprint body.

Finally, take the pink feathers and glue them to the center of the handprint body.

*You can also optionally draw an eye for the flamingo*

That’s the completed handprint flamingo! How cute!
