DIY Mini Felt Sandwich With Cheese, Ham, and Lettuce

I love felt because I think it's such a versatile craft material! It can be used to create various things, from toys to home decor. However, after making something, I'm sure you're left with felt scraps, struggling to find ways to repurpose them. This small felt sandwich is a perfect way to use up those scraps! Not only is it cute, but it's also perfect for kids' restaurant or sandwich shop roleplays!

Warning before we begin: this craft requires sewing, so it may not be suitable for younger kids (under the age of 8), especially without adult supervision.

Materials needed for bread and cheese:

-Brown felt cut in the shape of a bread slice

-Lighter shade of brown felt cut into a smaller-sized bread slice

-Brown string

-Needle

-Tiny bit of stuffing

-Small square of yellow felt (I used a 2 x 2-inch square, but you can make yours bigger or smaller, depending on the size of your felt scraps)

-Scissors

Now that we have everything, let’s get crafting!

First, let’s make the bread. Stack the two bread-shaped felt pieces, the smaller one on top. Take the brown string and sew the two pieces together in a basic running stitch about ¾ of the way around. Take the stuffing and wad it in between the two felt pieces.

Finish stitching the two pieces together, and your bread is done!

Now, onto the cheese. Making it is very simple- just cut out holes from the square of yellow felt.

Two components of our felt sandwich are done!

Let's make the ham now.

Materials needed for the ham:

-Pink felt circle (mine was about 1.75 inches in diameter, but you can make yours bigger or smaller, depending on the size of your bread slice)

-Brown string

-White string

-Needle

First, use the white string to backstitch a small circle slightly off-center. This little circle is the bone in the ham.

The remaining steps may be a little complex, but hopefully, my images will help.

We are now going to replicate the scored skin that ham often has. Take the brown string and backstitch a circle going all the way around the felt, about ⅛ of an inch away from the edge.

Next, with the brown string, whipstitch around the edge of the felt in a counterclockwise direction, poking the needle through the holes we made while backstitching.

Finally, whipstitch in a clockwise direction, so the border of the felt should look like little Xs.

The ham is done!

Let’s make the lettuce.

Materials needed for the lettuce:

-Two small pieces of light green felt cut to resemble a flower

-Dark green string

-Needle

I want to start by saying that the shapes of your felt lettuce pieces do not need to be perfect. As long as they have some bumps around the edges, you’re good!

Use the green string to stitch a trident shape in the middle of the felt lettuce leaf. The trident is the stem of the lettuce.

Our lettuce is done!

And that’s our completed felt sandwich! *Please note that I decided to leave my sandwich open-faced, but feel free to make another bread slice to put on top.*
