DIY Pom-Pom Bugs (Caterpillar and Dragonfly)

Most people think bugs are gross or frightening, but these DIY crawlies are quite the opposite of creepy!

Materials needed:

-Pom-poms of different colors and sizes

-Different colored pipe cleaners

-Glue

-Self-adhesive googly eyes (one pair for each bug)

-Scissors

Now that we have everything, let’s get crafting!

Let’s start by making the caterpillar first. Pick out a few pom-poms for the body of your caterpillar. I took six, but you can take more or less, depending on your desired length for the caterpillar.

Glue the pom-poms together, some higher or lower than others, to give the caterpillar a squiggly look. The first pom-pom should be the largest, as it is the head. Remember to firmly press the pom-poms together for at least 30 seconds when gluing them to ensure a tight bond.

Stick the self-adhesive googly eyes onto the pom-pom that is the caterpillar’s head.

Take one of the pipe cleaners (color of your choice) and cut off two approximately inch-long segments. The length of the segments does not need to be exact! Fold the ends of the pipe pieces to form a cane shape. These two canes are the antennae of the caterpillar.

Glue the two “antennae” onto the back of the caterpillar’s head, facing away from each other. Fun fact: caterpillar antennae help them smell and find food!

That’s the completed caterpillar! Now, let’s make the dragonfly.

Take a pom-pom and glue a pipe cleaner segment (around two inches in length) to it so that the pipe cleaner sticks out of the pom-pom.

Take another pipe cleaner (any color) and bend it to form a bunny-ear-like shape. This shape is the dragonfly’s wings. Fun fact: dragonflies can fly up to 35 miles per hour!

Attach the wings to the body pipe cleaner, cutting off any excess, and stick the googly eyes onto the pom-pom head.

That’s the completed dragonfly! Cute!
